Custom-Made Orthokeratology Contact Lenses in Adelaide

Discover the Freedom of Clear Vision with Orthokeratology

Imagine waking up every morning to a clear world without the need for glasses, contact lenses, or invasive eye surgery. Sound too good to be true? It’s not! Welcome to the world of orthokeratology – a revolutionary, non-surgical approach to vision correction.

Orthokeratology, also known as ortho-k, is a ground-breaking process that uses specially designed, comfortable contact lenses to gently reshape the cornea and focus your eyes while you sleep. Adelaide Eye Care has been fitting OrthoK since 1984.

Its great for kids and adults alike, and great for people who work or play in environments that aren't glasses or contact lens friendly. They can be a good option for people who do not achieve good comfort with daytime contact lenses.

This innovative treatment not only offers immediate vision enhancement but can also help slow down the progression of myopia (short-sightedness). On average, ortho-k slows down the worsening of short-sightedness by about 50% in children. Reducing the worsening of myopia gives a lifetime of thinner glasses, greater chance of suitability for laser eye surgery, and reduced risk of eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment and macular degeneration.

Unlock a world of visual freedom with orthokeratology.

How Orthokeratology Works

Ortho-k can correct low-to-moderate shortsightedness, low levels of astigmatism, and low levels of long-sightedness and presbyopia.

Similar to how retainers assist the development of teeth, Ortho-K lenses gently and painlessly mould the eye into an optimal shape. The main difference is that the ortho-k effect is completely reversible – without treatment, the eye surface eventually returns to its original shape.

Orthokeratology lenses are usually worn only during sleep, for as little as 3 but up to 7 nights per week. This can provide lasting clear vision without glasses or contact lenses.

Orthokeratology lenses also have vision prescription as part of their design, which enables clear vision during wear.

One night of Ortho-K wear typically produces 50-70% of the targeted correction. After two weeks, the eyes are usually fully corrected.

Promotes self-confidence, as kids typically prefer Ortho-K lenses over wearing glasses.

Eliminates the worry of broken or misplaced glasses

Makes sure their vision is clear throughout the day, enhancing classroom and sporting activities

Stabilises eyesight and reduces the chance of progressive myopic vision deterioration

Minimises the risks associated with high myopia, fostering long-term eye health.

Ortho-K lenses are simpler to manage and operate compared to traditional soft lenses.

What to Expect?

During your initial appointment, our Optometrists will check your prescription and ensure your eyes are healthy. We will perform a corneal topography to get the exact shape and curvature of the cornea. This information is then used to custom-make your OrthoK retainer contact lens.

Once the custom lenses are ready, we will show you how to use and care for them. Your retainer lens may need to be modified periodically to ensure your vision is good and your lenses are healthy for the eyes.

Ortho-K can provide good vision in a surprisingly short amount of time. However, this may vary depending on several factors, such as the curvature of your cornea and the degree of your prescription.
